What is 4-H?

Do you wonder what 4-H is all about? Take a peek at this video from National 4-H!

What is 4-H?

About 4-H

4-H is the largest youth organization in the United States with over 7 million participants. 4-H is best identified by its green four-leaf clover with an H on each leaf. The four H's on the emblem stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. 4-H is the only youth organization based at land-grant universities and the first experience many youth have with higher education.

4-H is a fun program where you get to "Learn by Doing. You can be a part of 4-H wherever you live. All youth between the ages of 5 and 18 are invited to join! In 4-H you can go to camp, ride in a bike rodeo, raise an animal, create a blog, give a presentation, participate in a community service project, develop your resume, practice interview skills, learn about healthy eating habits, build lifelong friendships. Best of all, member expenses are minimal, and you are not required to purchase a uniform.

4-H Builds Tomorrow's Leaders

  • For youth ages 5 to 18 (K - 12th grade.)
  • Youth can participate in 4-H in a variety of ways.
  • 4-H offers a wide range of projects, programs and activities that every member can do and use to develop life skills.
  • Parents, volunteers, community leaders, and Extension staff share their time and talents with 4-H youth.
  • Get involved in your community through 4-H!

How do I Join?

 There are many ways:

  • Join a 4-H club in your area.
  • Start a 4-H club . . . just 5 members, from 3 different families and an adult is all you need!
  • Join a special interest group--a group that gets together for a short time to learn about one thing, or to participate in one activity!
  • In your school, look for 4-H school enrichment programs!
  • Your local county 4-H agent is your key to getting started in 4-H.  She can tell you what clubs already exist in your town, what projects are being worked on or how to start a new club.

Things to know about joining a 4-H Club

  • Clubs are run by Volunteers and are called Club Leaders.
  • All Volunteers go through a screening process, including CORI checks.
  • Club Leaders set their club's schedule; they decide when and how often to meet.
  • Some clubs require more participation then others.
  • Animals are often owned by the Club Leader, other members or local farmers, and may be offered up for use by members.
  • There are age restrictions for working with larger animals.
  • Not all clubs involve animals. Some non-animals clubs are baking clubs, science clubs, quilting clubs, etc.
  • You MUST be fully enrolled in 4-H before participating in any 4-H activities.
  • To enroll, you must complete the paperwork and submit the participation fee.
  • The annual fee is $40. Checks are made payable to UMASS 4-H.
